This week is Thanksgiving over in the USA, which is great for me as American football is my favourite sport so you have games on a Thursday. While I do not entirely understand the tradition, it is roughly about giving thanks for things we have in life. Along those lines, fitness has many things that people take for granted and do not perhaps give it the appropriate credit. These include:

The Body’s Ability To Recover – I think we do not appreciate how great the body is, you can literally smash it up for years and then if you decide to turn things around behaviour wise, it has this innate ability to rapidly turn things rebound. I read a nice study this week showing how you can reverse heart tissue hardening even at 50 years old+ if you take up exercise. The body is genetically designed to be super healthy, it is just waiting for you to join the health party.

The Speed You Can Develop Fitness – Most people probably look at the super fit and think that is some far fetched dream to achieve, almost like they are aliens or something, because they are so different. However, in terms of fitness, it is ridiculous how quickly it can develop. Most people are under 12 months away from being in the top 5-10% of fitness.

You also do not need to put in crazy amounts of time, more you just need to consistently do it week on week for many months and use some well designed training plans. I have a client right now who has gone from being unable to run at all, to doing a 7 minute km. He has done this by running on average just 5 minutes a week over the last year. It shows tiny inputs can make progress, if that volume was stepped up slightly he will charge on to crazy levels.

Muscle development is a little slower to get to the top 5-10%, but muscle results are totally clouded by people taking enhancing substances. Within one year you can still make life changing gains.

That You Can Gain Weight – Not many people are happy about gaining weight but you should be. This is because it shows your body fat system is working just fine, there is no world in which it only goes one way. So if it can go on, then it means it can come off. This is far better than the other view, which is your system is broken and your hormones, genetics, habits etc mean you cannot lose weight.

Your Brain Can Override Everything – The other week I wrote about how your brain can literally overrule the biology within your body. This was shown in hormonal responses based off your beliefs. It is also something that is covered in the book Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton, which talks about the influence of the mind on your genes.

The power of this is something of great excitement, it means results are not necessarily tied to linear and predictable changes, but they can just explode and accelerate the change process.

The Apps, Devices & Groups Around Today – Fitness has never been easier due to the amount of gadgets, tools, apps and groups around. You can scan barcodes to count calories, your Garmin can 10x your motivation around running and Strava gives you the social media ‘kudos’ to make you want to exercise more. Running clubs have become dating events, every type of fitness is more available via online or in-person groups. There has never been a better time to want to be into fitness.

The Availability of What Is Possible – As a society there is now a divide, the majority of the population are in the worst shape, with the worst fitness in the history of humanity. However, the top 10 percent is the fittest we have ever been and the top 1 percent is just in a different world. There was no way to see this back in the olden days, but now you can see it with a quick skim through Instagram. This is not limited to just professional athletes, but 80 year olds, busy mothers and non able bodied athletes. When you see someone in your circumstances just crushing it, you begin to think, well, why not me. And I agree, why not?

What This Means For You

You may not be American, and the above probably isn’t in the actual spirit of Thanksgiving but hey, take a moment to consider the opportunities you have. 

As 2026 dawns, never get down or think you are not the person who can get fitness results. It is there waiting for you, if you have struggled previously then do not be scared to reach out for support. You only need to do one transformation in your life if you do it correctly.
