IIt is time to use motivation to your advantage, despite being the area that gets the most attention around the mindset of change it is perhaps the worst used.
Motivation is energy, motivation creates possibility.
If used wrong though, motivation is the block, it creates lethargy, it squashes creativity, it ends your attempt before it ever really began.
Your view of motivation is probably too narrow. Most people see motivation as being in that famous scene from rocky, you are running along, feeling pumped, charging up the steps and leading your campaign to glory. You are focused, dedicated, riding a wave of energy….
That is Hollywood, not real life.
Motivation is way more complicated than this, it has several more layers to unpack. Motivation is the energy, the emotion around your goal when you think about it yes. However, motivation is also how often you ever think about it, if that feeling about your goal is experienced for just a minute once a week it will not do anything for your results. Some of the most motivated people you know just think more about their goal more often than most, rather than ever experience the rocky running up the steps moment.
Real life motivation is perhaps is more about who wins the limited space for your mental attention. Can we take your goal from 7th to 4th on your list of topics most thought about in a day. Even if that is only for a few minutes this could be enough to change your balance of results.
The two biggest areas that people miss around motivation are how many thoughts are demotivating you. This usually centres around the feelings you have about doing the day to day tasks, as well as sometimes bigger fears around being successful. It also comes hand in hand with things that disrupt your motivational flow, this could be the lack of belief in success or a person who knocks you off track.
The other area is the skill of self-persuasion, have you ever tried to get a 3 year old to do something? You will enter a series of negotiations to get them distracted, tempted or ordered into doing want you want. This same process needs to happen within your own mind around your behaviours in the moments you need them the most.
Motivation is something that you do, that you create. It is not something you naturally have, it is not something other people have but you could never develop. It is something that is not just available to you, it is something you can access within seconds to minutes. It is right there waiting for you, you simply need to tune into the thoughts that energise you, while releasing those that do not.
How To Generate Motivation
You will need to think about your goals, contemplate the benefits, the consequences or reflect upon your feelings. Spend a couple of minutes answering the questions below:
-What’s the most exciting thing that achieving your goal would bring into your life?
-What worries you the most about being in the same place, or worse than today, in 2 years’ time?
-Who could you talk to regularly about your goal? (AI counts)
-What thoughts drain or demotivate you around your goal? What would be a better way to handle them?
-Think of the actions you struggle to get done. If you friend was having problems doing them, what would you say to persuade them?
If you are waiting to wake up feeling motivated every day, you will probably spend a long time waiting. Motivation is something you create by directing your attention towards the thoughts that energise you and away from those that drain you. You just need to spend some time looking within, such as using these questions as a guide, until you find that motivation. The more often your goal enters your mind in a positive way, the more likely you are to act on it. Small moments of motivation repeated consistently are usually far more powerful than one dramatic burst of inspiration.
