I competed in the Nuclear games a couple of weeks ago which is an easier version of Hyrox with a more fun, participation vibe. It was a great day out with a few of us competing in the pouring rain. While I am always writing away about different areas of health & fitness and what I am up to, I always forget to mention what my clients are doing. I just put up an Instagram story archive of client wins and thought I’d do a quick rundown here:
Hybrid Fitness – The current trend in training, I have helped numerous people compete in their first competitions through both my clients and Friday night track group including: Rosie, Selma, Chunzi, James B, Matt C, Rhys, Ben, Chris, Dan, Benjy, Will, and Ella, with more debuts to come this year.
Island Games Medals – My client Mhairi won a solo Bronze, and team Gold in this year’s Island Games in Orkney. She ran a season’s best with a half marathon time of 1.23.58. We have been working on her strength & injury prevention in our sessions.
National Cycling TT Qualification – Another aerobic machine who I work with via online sessions for strength training, Simon, qualified for the nationals in Time Trial bike racing over 10 miles.
Crushing Fitness Barriers – I have had a few people go under 20 minute mark in 5km this year, Peter, James S, Mhairi and Michael all broke this coveted time. The gym equivalent is benching 100kg and Shanil nailed that landmark too.
Weight loss – Most people who work with me are looking for it all, to get fitter, healthier and trim down a little. I have had four people this year lose 10kg+, and most clients lose a varying amount of body fat. As I wrote about in my book, this is the area that is most difficult to achieve as it is integrated to everything that we do.
First Runs & 5km’s – While social media loves the attention of the 20, 25 or 30 minute 5km barrier, for me the greatest satisfaction comes in helping people complete their first ever run. Every year, I take people from not believing they could even run, to short duration jogging, of which many of whom go on to run a 5km. There are too many to name who either ran for the first time or set a new PB in 5km.
First time exercising for years – People who are exercising for the first time ever, or for many years, do not get enough credit for the effort it takes to pull yourself out of the sedentary life and try to get fit. I always have time and patience for anyone starting. My approach is also perfect in that I am not at all about pushing it hard, shouting at people or any traditional views people have of exercise, as basically it is totally unnecessary unless at a high level already.
Injury rehab – For years I have honed my injury rehab skills as this is what you run into the most as a trainer of normal people. Most people have a few niggles when they start, while others have more serious injuries. I helped Anthony come back from a broken spine after a car crash, Suzanne improve many of her injuries from another car crash too. I helped a few clients with skiing accident injuries and resolved long-standing pains that have been around for years. I have yet to integrate the injury rehab approach from my latest course I did from Conor Harris, but once I have, I should be able to help yet more people and also be able to do it online.
The 50 & 60 Year Old Domination Squad – I have a group of clients who are in their 50s or 60s who are just machines compared to your everyday person. We are in an era of having the fittest people at every age group in the history of humanity, yet the society average is sadly at the worst it has ever been. Shout out to Matt, Ian, Russell, Neil, Simon for pushing the levels.
Other Achievements – I had great fun helping Aoife get up to speed for Sandhurst officer training, Alex competing for international lacrosse, and the brothers Sam & Ollie learning Calisthenics. I also helped people with triathlons, running events and more.
What Does This Mean For You?
What I hate about posting any real life story of success is that people just jump to the wrong conclusion about how they got there. They immediately think they must have been motivated, disciplined, sacrificed so much or already good at sport etc.
The reality is that the people with results just did a nice effort, they were a long way from perfect. Great achievements come from a consistent application with some guidance over time. Anyone can do it, including you.
I think many people fear that when they have a trainer they need to be perfect, to sacrifice everything, or are scared of letting me down. My viewpoint is that the average client is a disaster, they don’t do what they say, they make mistakes, forget what they were meant to do, drop back into old habits and more. This is real life, it is what I expect, it is part of a real world process.
Despite this, you can get good results like the stories above, or maybe now is not the time to get results. I have had a few clients get subdued results while working with me, then later, they go off on their own, lose 20kg or similar and then credit me for the prior stuff we did. Sometimes, the time just isn’t right, yet later on it is. This does not worry me as I am just out here trying my best to help you and the rest will look after itself.
